Transactions

Let's now take a look at the transactions for February:

Buys

  • CVS Health (CVS): 18 shares were purchased, resulting in $36.00 in forward 12-month dividend income. After not increasing their dividend for some time, due to their focus on reducing debt load from the Aetna acquisition, they appear to be in position to raise their dividend payout either later in 2021 or for 2022, so I figured now is a good time to load up. For the near future, this will be my top priority in adding shares.
  • Kroger (KR): 26 shares were purchased, resulting in $16.64 in forward 12-month dividend income. With recent run-up of the market, Kroger appeared to be one of the few remaining stocks still undervalued, so I have been adding here until I hit my 5% threshold (I limit myself in most cases to allocating no more than 5% of my portfolio to a particular stock).
  • UGI Corp. (UGI): 13 shares were purchased, resulting in $17.16 in forward 12-month dividend income. Similar situation as Kroger, will UGI appearing to be one of the few remaining stocks at a good value, so I have been steadily adding. At the time of me writing this, they have experienced a run-up recently and are probably out of range for me to be adding anymore.

All totaled, my purchases for February 2021 will add $69.80 in forward 12-month dividend income. Similar purchases over 12 months would add $837.60 in yearly dividend income.

Looking back over time, what stands out is that there was actually a decrease in income for February 2021, compared with a year ago, from $204.19 to $186.53. The major reason for this is most likely my selling of Lazard (LAZ) stock to move away from future dependence on K-1 forms for tax preparation reasons. LAZ was a significant contributor to my dividend income during the 2nd month of each quarter (February, May, August, and November),  and a lot of the resulting proceeds from that sale went to stocks that pay their dividends during the 3rd month of each quarter (March, June, September, and December). So, I'm expecting quite the results for next month's summary!

Comparison to Last Quarter and Last Year

The decrease in dividend income over the last quarter and year is shown in the below table

%Chg
Qtr
%Chg Year
Feb 2021-22.85%-8.65%

Oddly enough, the decrease from the last quarter (November 2020 payout) is even larger than the comparison of a year ago. Normally you would expect the comparison to a year ago to yield the larger % difference. However, my recent decision to start adding to CVS again should balance this out in the coming months, as CVS also pays their dividend in the 2nd month of each quarter.
